Welcome to the Historical Society of Dunkirk,
and to the Dunkirk Historical Museum, Dunkirk, N.Y.

The Historical Society of Dunkirk has operated the Dunkirk Historical Museum at 513 Washington Avenue in Dunkirk since 1980 and continues to provide historical information to the public regarding the city. This website provides some informational content regarding the history of our city, but also gives a brief overview of our Collections, which outlines the contents of our museum, including documents, research material, photographs, art work, as well as physical objects that range from medals to fire fighting equipment to railroad paraphernalia. Look for the form that allows you to submit a request for historical and genealogical research.

We encourage you to join on our efforts to preserve the history of Dunkirk by becoming a member and through your donations, and by participating in events sponsored by the museum.

Dunkirk Women’s History

The Historical Museum of Dunkirk is proud to present our new exhibit about the achievements of local women. The display takes a look at the struggles of only a sampling of notable Dunkirk women, including a determined women’s suffragist, a nationally best-selling author, a world-travelling lawyer, an award-winning golfer, and a much-beloved dance teacher, plus a look at some local women’s organizations.

Mission Statement

The aims of the Society shall be to aid in the preservation of historical sites and landmarks; to help in the development and preservation of local history, including the family histories of pioneers, early settlers, and citizens of Dunkirk; to acquire and save for public use and exhibition all relics, pictures, maps and articles of historic value dealing with the economic, political, patriotic and cultural life of the community; to aid, encourage and promote the Dunkirk Historical Museum.
